VTT is a research partner of the Mixed Fleet “Shared Situational Awareness for Optimized and Safe Mixed Fleets” project (2023-2026) focuses on studying and developing future technological solutions, systemic safety, and new business models for industrial internal logistics. Mixed fleets consist of AGVs, AMRs, forklift trucks, and overhead cranes. In addition to tracking autonomous machines, also UWB-based tracking is used for manually controlled machines and humans enabling holistic, mixed fleet level situational awareness and optimization.
Central to the Mixed Fleet project is the shared 3D situational awareness aimed at optimizing traffic, material handling, and ensuring systemic safety in industrial mixed fleets: - Autonomous creation and update of factory digital twins - Tracking and control of both autonomous and manual traffic – and humans - Sharing data between machines and for humans for traffic optimization and safety - Immersive, multimodal and multiuser factory metaverse for 3D situational awareness - Systemic safety of mixed fleets operating alongside humans
The emphasis of our project is on enhancing mixed fleet 3D perception capabilities and data utilization in M2M and M2H interactions. Data related to e.g. crowded areas, blocked routes, and safety risks is collected and shared between machines and for humans. Mixed fleet safety risks will be identified and new operation models will be created for ensuring systemic safety.
Novelty value of VTT’s technological R&D builds on autonomously created and updated point cloud and image based factory metaverses. They provide immersive 3D situational awareness of e.g. mixed fleet machine status, locations, routes, and danger zones. The factory metaverse can be used for e.g. planning, simulating and testing mixed fleet operations and dynamic routing. New cutting edge technological proofs-of-concepts will be developed and demonstrated related to 3D visual SLAM and object detection. In addition to machines merely detecting obstacles, also semantic information will be gained on what the object is and it's visualized in the factory metaverse.
